Sixties The Space Race
Driven
by technological competition with the Soviet Union who had put a man in
space in 1961 (Yuri Gagarin) Scientific advances
in the United States through the sixties culminated in July
1969 with
Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.
The
Apollo 11 mission had blasted off from Cape Kennedy at 9.37a.m local
time on July 16 on board were mission commander Neil Armstrong, pilot
Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, Michael Collins and the lesser known fourth
astronaut
The
first words officially spoken from the surface of the moon is said to be
Neil Armstrong saying 'Houston. Tranquility base here. The Eagle has
landed (Eagle was the name given to the command module) Although
conspiracy rumours still abound that a tired and emotional had
already seized control of the intercom as the Apollo 11 touched down and
announced to the waiting world... 'I'm wearing two belts'
